Class: Grade IV+ V
Level: The water needs to be just under [10cm] or just over the square concrete part of the pilon under the bridge on the Bruce highway.
Length: 1km grade IV 100m/km
Time: 1 to 2 hours depending on scouting time.
Take out: About 800m after the road turns to gravel, turn left and drive 300m down to river. Leave a car here.
Put in: Carpark at locked gate.
Character: Steep creeking at its best. Falls, shutes, slides and big drops.
||Behana Gorge is one of the steepest creek in the area.|
It is only run-able during the wet and runs for a few days after rain. The top section drops 100m in 1km. Above that are some gnarly grade V - VI water falls.
The best put in is adjacent to the tight left bend just as the water falls come into view. Anything above this is class V+ and for expert creekers only. Once in the gorge, the action starts almost immediately!
1st up there is drop after drop, then, slides into slides, and then drops into slides and so on and so on. You get the picture? This is great grade IV creeking at its best, and you need to be ready for some action!
There are a couple of spots along the hike in where you can look down into the gorge and check out the upcoming action. One spot in particular, there is a concrete walk way with steel mesh and pipe fencing. From here you can see a large boulder in the river where the main flow seems to run river left of it. This is a very bad sieve!!! There is a portage on river left. You re-enter the creek level with the boulder, in a small flow far left. A small S bend takes you into a section of slides and into a pool.
After the 1st kilometer, the creek splits. Here, take the right stream for another 1.5km of boulder action with slightly less gradient. If you take the left stream, it will bring you back to a small pool right beside the walk in track. It is a 15min walk out from here if you have had enough.
Getting there; travel south from the city about 26km to Gordonvale and then a further 5.8km before turning off the Bruce highway to the right. [see Google image page] Follow the small sealed farm road for 3km, then a further 800m of gravel. Just before the dip, turn left down a dirt track about 300m to leave a car at the take out. Return 300m back to the road gravel road, turn left and drive a further 800m to the car park. The walk to the put in is about 3km along an undulating concrete track.
