Cairns and it's surrounding region has the highest average rainfalls in the country, with a wet season spanning November to March. During these months, the mountainous back drop, forces the rain to fall onto the hinterland just west of the area. Overnight down pours of 200 to 300mm are not uncommon. From here, some spectacular rivers form and carve their way to the sea through the Great Dividing Range. Some of the larger rivers run all year round. The paddling around Cairns can vary from afternoon runs to 5 day camping trips, 1 in 10 grade 5 steep creeks to leisurely grade II river runs. There are still creeks and rivers here yet to be paddled.
Cairns Kayaking web site is primarily designed as a guide to white water kayaking in the Cairns and North Queensland region. We are happy to share our part of paddling parradise with the world, so whether you get your self here for some paddling or just visit the site for our photo galleries and stories, we hope you enjoy. Always clean up and respect our delicate environment. Leave only a ripple, & take nothing but photos.
We hope to see you on a river soon. The Barron River Crew |
